The quality of the bamboo from Damyang Slow City is the best in Korea. The way bamboo stands upright represents truth and virtue; its straightness represents success in life; the empty space within stands for justice, and a tied bamboo joint is a symbol for people deciding the purpose in their lives. Bamboo contains large amounts of vitamin C and other nutrients. During the spring, new bamboo shoots rise from the soil, quickly growing to a height of around 20cm within a week. People take these shoots to use in fresh salads, to use as a dish to steam rice in. Fully grown bamboo is used for house construction, furniture and tableware.
